The Issue

Coverage Expansion and the Affordable Care Act

There’s a coverage gap in Indiana.

Families who earn less than 24 percent of the federal poverty level qualify for health coverage through Medicaid.

Individuals and families who earn above 100 percent of the federal poverty level qualify for tax credits and subsidies on health insurance purchased through the Health Insurance Marketplace.

But nearly 300,000 hard-working Hoosiers—including those who work full-time in lower wage jobs—fall into a gap: They earn too much for Medicaid, and not enough for federal subsidies.

Coverage expansion bridges the gap for adults in poverty. If Indiana chooses not to expand Medicaid, thousands of Hoosiers will.
